Rough rock-textured café counter with sculpted relief

Rough rock and sculpted stone-effect walls bring depth, movement and character to a space. At SurfaceLab, two main approaches create this look: pieces cast in silicone moulds, and cementitious finishes sculpted on site.

Silicone-moulded stone texture

Stone-texture pieces are cast in silicone moulds, fixed to the wall, and their joints concealed to create a visually continuous finish. The pieces are typically 0.5–3 cm thick. This is generally the more economical approach, although the mould creates a repeating pattern. Careful placement and joint finishing help the surface feel cohesive.

Stone effects sculpted on site

For more individual contours and greater depth, a cementitious material designed for this application is shaped on site. An artist develops the projections, recesses and texture around the approved aesthetic. Their skill is essential to giving the surface the variation and character of natural rock.

On-site sculpting is particularly suited to large or double-height walls, especially when a more pronounced relief is wanted.

How deeper features are built up

The total build-up of deeper sculpted features can range from around 3 cm to 25 cm. This is the complete feature—not a solid thickness of cementitious material. Lightweight foam forms the underlying shape, with the cementitious finish making up a smaller outer layer. The build-up and fixing approach are developed for the particular wall and design.

Colour, samples and protective sealing

The approved sample establishes the texture, colour and degree of variation. The finish can be one approved tone, or an artist can introduce tonal variation similar to natural rock. Viewing the sample alongside the surrounding materials and lighting helps show how its contours and shadows will read in the space.

A protective sealer is always applied as part of the finish.

Outdoor use and care

Stone-effect finishes can be used outdoors, with the material, build-up and protective sealer selected for the project. Routine cleaning can be carried out with a damp cloth, following the care instructions for the chosen finish and sealer.

Which approach is right for your wall?

Silicone-moulded texture is generally the more economical option for shallower relief. On-site sculpting offers greater freedom over depth and movement, particularly for large walls and bespoke rock effects. The right choice depends on your approved sample, wall dimensions and budget.

Discuss your stone-texture project

Share the project location, approximate wall dimensions and two or three reference images. SurfaceLab brings bespoke finish selection and hands-on project management together, from the first reference to the final review.
